In the golden age of print media, glossy mags held a rich narrative of female life between their covers. Coverage on the best bang-for-your-buck lip gloss existed alongside hard-hitting journalism and cultural commentary. Although not without their faults, early-noughties editorial encapsulated all the messiness, confusion, excitement, and pain of being a modern woman – a holistic exploration of culture and identity that’s been watered down and filtered to its bare minimum on social media.
At Blotting Papers, cultural commentary meets good old fashioned editorial escapism, because essayist Zoe Yohn believes in high-low, and our collective capacity to still care deeply for societal critique and luxe tableware through the power of narrative investigation of the self.
